Symposium on Women’s Face of AIDS in Greater Mekong Subregion

The Symposium on Women's Face of AIDS in Greater Mekong Subregion was held on 15-16 March 2006 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, hosted by the Ministry of Women's Affairs.

The symposium was technically and financially supported by UNAIDS Regional Support Team for Asia and Pacific (under APLF and Global Coalition on Women and AIDS) and Rockefeller Foundation. It brought together over 70 delegates from the 6 countries in the Mekong Sub-region - Cambodia, China (Yunnan Province), Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam. Participants were from national AIDS programmes, leaders of women’s organisations, women living with HIV, community workers and researchers, as well as a broad range of high level government officials from the hosting country. The meeting was opened and closed by HE Dr Ing Kantha Pahvi, Minister of Women Affairs, Cambodia who reiterated her commitment and leadership, and urged delegates to find ways to ‘leverage our voice’ to the highest political levels.

Overall, there was a remarkable degree of consensus on the nature, scale and complexity of the problems, and on the approaches needed to mitigate them. There was also a very heartening sense of inspiration and solidarity across the countries which resulted in some very concrete commitments for follow-up action at both country and sub regional level.
